Scripture: Matthew 1:1
An account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Thought for the Day: In our English translation, we miss an important word. In Greek, the word genealogy is geneseos. That word looks a lot like Genesis, and that’s because it is. As the book of Genesis is a story describing the creation of the world and the formation of a people, Matthew is depicting the creation of a new world and the formation of a new people. For Matthew, the event of Jesus the Messiah is not simply a reworking of the old, but a transformation that leads to a whole new creation. Is your life just a reworking of the old, or do you see yourself as something new through the gift of God’s love? Let this Christmas be for you the genesis of something truly new.
Prayer: Creative God, help me to live in your new kingdom with a whole new attitude. Amen.
