Scripture: Luke 2:5
Joseph went to be enrolled together with Mary, who was promised to him in marriage and who was pregnant.
Thought for the Day: How culture has changed? At the time when Luke’s Gospel was written, most marriages were arranged by the children’s parents. At this point in our story, Mary was maybe 13 or 14 years old and Joseph could have been anywhere between 17-20+ years old. In today’s world, we not only find this troubling, we’d be looking to press charges…as we should. This can make the story somewhat difficult to read. Yet for me, I am still able to be awed by this very young woman’s faithfulness over and against a culture that did not respect her opinion, freewill or even her physical body. Mary has become one who represents strength that does not conform to the cultural powers that attempt to keep her in check. For that, I can say, AMEN!
Prayer: For all the witnesses and models of gracious and faithful strength, I offer gratitude to you, O Lord, the inspiration of such strength. Amen.
