Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: John 1:1-2
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.

Thought for the Day: John’s Gospel starts with the theological language often spoken by scholarly people in ivory towers…or at least that’s the way these words are often heard.  But in fact, the Gospel was very relevant to a specific community at the end of the first century.  Often we make quick judgments that lead to misconceptions, and to assume the fourth Gospel was only for academics is to miss a marvelous work.  The opening words of John’s Gospel talk of how the divine Word refused to remain distant, but came among humanity.  John’s Gospel embodied this same message.  The author took the Jesus story and made it relevant and meaningful for a very specific group of people.  How will you make the Jesus story relevant for your family, friends and others you encounter?

Prayer: O Holy Word, make us instruments by which the Gospel becomes relevant and meaningful to those we encounter.  Amen.
