Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Exodus 14:15
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry out to me? Tell the Israelites to go forward.

Thought for the Day: The Israelites were fleeing from enslavement in Egypt, and all the people could do was complain.  They even had the audacity to ask, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us, bringing us out of Egypt” (Exodus 14:11)?  It is amazing how good we are at maintaining our own slavery even when God has provided a way to freedom.  We are funny creatures, and I would suggest that we are the only creatures capable of tripping over something that is behind us.  Fear, guilt and a whole host of other emotions from the past can snag us in the present.  Even though they are behind us, it is as if a small tentacle of past problems has wrapped itself around our ankle and we are unknowingly dragging it along.  It almost appears as if we are self-sabotaging our future.   During this Advent Season, be aware of how God is coming again as your entry point into new life.  Don’t allow a sense of unworthiness or anxiety or guilt to keep you from accepting and embracing the gift of loving liberation found wrapped in bands on cloth.

Scripture: Set me free, O Lord, with the gift the angels announced and shepherds venerated. Liberate me, Gracious God, from what was so I can be who I am to be.  Amen.
