Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 1:69-71

He has raised up a mighty savior for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.

Thought for the Day: Going back to the Song of Zechariah (devotional from two days ago), I am struck by something I don’t believe I have noticed before.  This New Testament song from Luke’s Gospel sounds a lot like an Old Testament Psalm of deliverance.  This makes sense in that Luke desired to emphasize that what God has done is what God continues to do.  The events that are happening are not part of a new divine plan, but are a continuation of God’s saving activity.  Zechariah is overjoyed with what he sees, but he is not surprised.  He knows the stories of how God has worked, and it is through that lens that he now clearly sees what God is doing.  As we become reacquainted with these stories of divine mercy and kindness, may it awaken our perception to what God continues to do today.

Prayer: Merciful God, may these stories of saving grace correct our spiritual vision so that we can more clearly see you at work.  Amen.
