Ecclesiological Etchings: 02-13-13

Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1st Samuel 3:4-5
Then the Lord called, “Samuel! Samuel!” and he said, “Here I am!” 5 and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down.

Thought for the Day: Tonight at our Ash Wednesday Service (6:45pm), I will take a few minutes to reflect on these words from 1st Samuel.  As we move into the season of Lent, are we listening to God?  Are we aware of God’s whisper that makes no sound but can move a mountain?  God is calling us, but are we attentive to who is speaking and what is being said?   Paul Tillich was an amazing theologian whose ideas were very complex, yet he could bring it down to where most of us could grasp of few tidbits of his thinking.  In one of those moments, Tillich wrote: “The duty of love is to listen.”   God has shown us the importance of listening, for God has heard the cries of humanity and responded.  But God also hopes we will attune our senses to the divine utterances made real in so many different mediums.  Don’t be surprised at who or what God might use to vocalize the divine thinking.

Prayer: I am listening, God.  I am listening…   Amen.
