Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: James 4:17
It is a sin when someone knows the right thing to do and doesn’t do it.

Thought for the Day: Yesterday, Christians (including many clergy) from across the country participated in what is called the Poor People’s Campaign, specifically kicking off the 40 Days of Moral Action. The campaign specifically focuses on economic injustice, the brokenness caused by racism, the deepening divide between the rich and the poor within our country (and around the world), and other moral issues. Our own Rev. William Barber has been the voice for this ecumenical and interfaith movement, and today a number of my friends and colleagues were arrested in acts of peaceful civil disobedience. I know there are differences of opinion on whether Christians should put themselves in what many call the “political realm,” and I am quick to state that Christians must be very cautious in ever declaring that one candidates or one political party is the Christian candidate or party. At the same time, Christians must recognize how their silence is seen by many as being complicit in the immorality of poverty, racism and economic injustice. If Christians want to know the single greatest cause of the exodus from Church, we need to look no further than our lack of moral leadership on the very issues that were central to the prophets of old and Jesus.

Prayer: Call me to be a voice for those who have no voice. O Holy God, let my life be a means by which your compassion and justice are brought to each and every human being. Amen.
