Scripture: Matthew 28:19
Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…
Thought for the Day: Thomas Merton, the Trappist Monk and Mystic, wrote in New Seeds of Contemplation:
It is because the Love of God does not terminate in one self-sufficent self that is capable of halting and absorbing it, that the Life and Happiness of God are absolutely infinite and perfect and inexhaustible.
When we think about giving something to another person, it is usually a finite gift… something that we must relinquish at the point of giving. Within the divine nature, we find perfect (the fullness of) love, and though God’s giving is generous beyond measure, it does not lessen or diminish the capacity or power of the love. It is like a self-sufficient energy source (like the Arc Reactor in the Iron Man movies) – once love is initially shared, the very nature of the gift continues to power the giving and the gift. Within the nature of the Triune God, this continues without slowing or degenerating this relational gift. For us as humans, the gift of love is constantly deluded by our selfishness and self-interest; by our pettiness and short-sightedness; by our brokenness and insecurities. This is why, on those occasions, when someone truly offers the gift of selfless love, the impact is dramatic. People take notice because its power does not appear lost in the exchange. It resembled what is happening within God.
Prayer: May the love that flows within you, O God of Love, find us to be a worthy conduit by which its power continues to flow unobstructed. Amen.
