Scripture: Acts 17:1
Paul and Silas journeyed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, then came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.
Thought for the Day: We often romanticize Paul’s journeys. We are greatly influenced by movies that depict people crossing deserts and climbing mountains in search of their purpose. It is hard to depict on the big screen all the messiness of such travels. First, there were no rest stops with indoor plumbing along the way. Though they probably received hospitality from time to time, there were other stretches along the way when they were between towns, and the only place to rest was under a tree. There must have been periods when food was scarce, and I can only imagine that their well calloused feet still had a few blisters from all the walking. And let’s get real, there were no laundromats. The stench on their clothing could have stopped a herd of water buffalo. I don’t mean to mess with your beautiful images of Paul and his travels, but getting realistic increases my appreciation and respect. I’d like to think I would have been right alongside Paul, but I like a good bed and I know how bad my workout clothes smell after just one day of wearing.
Prayer: Thank you for all those who were inspired by your invitation, O God who beckons us to follow. May I never forget their struggles and the suffering they endured to present the Gospel to another community, another generation. Amen.
