Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1st John 1:5-7
This is the message that we have heard from him and announce to you: “God is light and there is no darkness in him at all.” If we claim, “We have fellowship with him,” and live in the darkness, we are lying and do not act truthfully. But if we live in the light in the same way as he is in the light, we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from every sin.

Thought for the Day: I don’t like to venture into what some will call politics, but I am so very troubled by our immigration system (and not just under the present leadership as this has troubled me for a few decades) and what has and continues to occur. I raised concerns about deportations five years ago, but another issue troubles me today. Currently, we are separating families, specifically children from their parents. I listened intently to two government officials attempt to explain and justify it earlier today, and it was embarrassing…as it cannot be explained or justified. One of the most important and honored values in our culture is that of family. And the very thing that many of these individuals are fleeing is fear for their families. Even when we’ve told ourselves that the end will justify the means, we always learn later that it did not. In this case, we are becoming the very thing we deplore. I understand that people are trying to figure out how to reduce undocumented individuals from coming to this country, but how we approach this complex issue and move forward must always reveal our highest ideals. We may not believe we are undermining ourselves when we do things like this to “those people,” but in fact we are. We are called to be light, and everything we do should reflect light…or at least not bring darkness.

Prayer: As you were and continue to be light to this world, O Gracious God, give us creativity and wisdom when it comes to the difficult problems in our world. As those who seek to be light, let us hear again the scriptural declaration – when thinking about the immigrants among us, remember that we were once sojourners in a foreign land. Amen.
