Scripture: John 1:1-2
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The Word was with God in the beginning.
Thought for the Day: We must always remember just how powerful words are. As children, we might have repeated the adage, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” I have come to believe that we shouldn’t teach our children that saying. Words can be very painful, for they can cause a lot of destruction and damage. Instead, we need to empower both children and adults with the ability to choose the language that will define them. What language, though hurtful, can we release to the redeeming grace of God? What language can we embrace and use to define us as God would define us? It is the positive and life-giving language that we need to celebrate, for there are words that have the ability to remedy a difficult situation, to bring healing and uplift even the lowest of hearts. To speak of the eternal Christ as the Word was John’s way of weaving Greek philosophy and Christian theology together. This Word is a creative Word that didn’t simply create in one moment, but continues to create and recreate…to create and recreate us in a way that is healthy and joyful and spirit-filled. It is this God-Word that whispers to our soul a message of our belovedness from which we can comfortably love others.
Prayer: May your grace-filled Word continue to speak to my soul, O God who was and is and will be. Speak your Word that will bring me life. Amen.
