Scripture: James 2:26
For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.
Thought for the Day: What exactly does James mean by “spirit” in this passage? It is the Greek word pneuma, which is used to describe the Spirit of God. At the same time, I used to sit in the stands at football games and chant, “We’ve got spirit, yes we do. We’ve got spirit. How `bout you?” In that context, it was more about enthusiasm and our school pride/energy. I can’t say for sure, but I tend to think James was referring to the Spirit of God. Earlier, James spoke of Rahab who risked so much for the sake of others. Her faith was alive in such a way that other people could see in her the Spirit, and that’s the reason her story has continued to be told. When the Spirit of God is present in a person’s life, we are claiming that the fullness of God, which includes the death and resurrection of Jesus, is fully present in that person. When such a power is present in one’s life, it is impossible to hold it back. Such a power will be manifest in works of grace, mercy and justice.
Prayer: May the Spirit be present in my life, not simply in some theoretical way. Bring to me, O God, the fullness of your divine life. I ask this in the knowledge that such a presence will forever change me, and in changing me, will make me an instrument of your good works. Amen.
