Scripture: Judges 3:24
After Ehud had slipped out, the king’s servants came and found that the room’s doors were locked. So they thought, He must be relieving himself in the cool chamber.
Thought for the Day: Ehud has just killed the Moabite King by plunging a sword into his belly. The description appears to resemble something you might see in a teen horror-flick. Ehud had gotten himself alone with the king by suggesting he had a private message. After the politically motivated assassination, which is what it was (though justified by the scriptures), the assassin slips out. The king’s entourage that had stepped out find themselves waiting to be invited back in, and because it is taking so long, they assume it is because the king is “relieving himself in the cool chamber.” I think we know what that means, though the King James Version translates it as, “Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.” What does that mean? We have so often tried to clean-up scripture, to make it sound so high and holy. Yet it is much earthier and real than we would like to admit. When someone locks the door, and it appears as if s/he does not wish to be disturbed, it might be that s/he is needing some time on the toilet…or in this case, he’s been assassinated. Don’t you love scripture!
Prayer: My life is real and messy and earthy. Thank you, Lord, for introducing me to people who found themselves living lives that were real and messy and earthy. Amen.
