Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Leviticus 19:33-34
When immigrants live in your land with you, you must not cheat them. Any immigrant who lives with you must be treated as if they were one of your citizens. You must love them as yourself, because you were immigrants in the land of Egypt; I am the LORD your God.

Thought for the Day: The idea of hospitality is rooted in the Jewish/Christian identity. In fact, it extends to most all cultures of the Middle East. Scripture taught the necessity of showing hospitality to the foreigner, immigrant, stranger, traveler, etc. The Jewish teachings in support of the Torah, teachings Jesus would have known well, gave many examples of what this hospitality was to looks like. It was taught that Abraham and Sarah left a door open on each side of their home, so that no matter what direction  someone might be approaching, s/he would see welcome. Rabbinic literature taught what was called hakhnasat oreḥim, the bringing in of guests. It was considered an essential act of kindness, especially toward those who could not repay you for the generosity shown. Of course, when someone within the faith chose not to demonstrate hospitality, it was considered more than a sin, but an undercutting of the foundational values of the tradition. This is clearly seen in the Gospels as Jesus was both dependent upon hospitality, and when the opportunity presented itself, he made sure others felt welcome.

Prayer: Give me a heart that is both inviting and welcoming, O God who first loved me. Allow my life to demonstrate true hospitality as I learn to share the resources I have. This I pray in the name of Jesus whose life was an open door of grace and acceptance. Amen.
