Scripture: Psalm 69:1
Save me, God, because the waters have reached my neck!
Thought for the Day: This coming Sunday, portions of Psalm 69 will be referenced. When the author declares, “Save me…,” the Hebrew word we translate as save is: Yasha`. This word is the basis for the name Joshua and the name Jesus. Joshua continued the saving work that started with Moses – a liberation of an enslaved people. Jesus embodied this same saving work, demonstrating how this saving activity is a central part of the Eternal God. God is the One who hears the cries of humanity and doesn’t simply react. God is always responding, even before we recognize our need to be rescued. To be clear, the idea of saving or rescuing is not always how we might define it. What I do believe is that God rescues us from all that attempts to obstruct or eschew God’s unmerited love. When you know that nothing can separate you from the love of God (Romans 8), then you live in a state of salvation. Rough stuff will happen, and the waters might rise high (figuratively or literally), but God remains faithfully present with a love that knows no end.
Prayer: When I cry to you, Eternal God, I believe you were already aware and already at work before my cry even reached my lips. Thank you for being aware of my situation, and continuing to bring embodied expressions of your love, especially your incarnation, Jesus Christ. Amen.
