Scripture: Isaiah 41:10
…do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.
Thought for the Day: I don’t know how many times I have offered these words at a funeral, graveside or hospital bedside. I don’t know, but it has been many…hundreds of times. These are ancient words offered to a lost people who were looking into the abyss of exile. Many of them would never know what it meant to return to their homeland (Israel). Many of them would spend the remainder of their lives in the distant land of Babylon. It is easy to see how fear could overtake one’s mindset; how a person could feel completely discouraged; how disillusionment could leave one feeling spiritually isolated. Though Isaiah will offer some visions that provide hope of returning some day, these words from chapter 41 appear spoken directly to those who live between the proverbial rock and hard place. Upholding with the “victorious right hand,” does not necessarily mean a rescue. It describes God who raises the oppressed to a place where they are able to better see God who is compassionate and concerned. These words are encouraging. It’s like the person who comes alongside you in a time of difficulty. The person’s concern does not solve your problems, but you do not feel so alone as you face them. I can almost imagine one of the exiled people, upon hearing these words, saying, “I’m not too sure how I will face tomorrow, but I believe God will be with me. And for that reason, I feel confident that together we’ll face tomorrow.”
Prayer: Though all my challenges and heartaches might not find resolution in the ways I’d like, I trust that you are with me, Gracious and Eternal God. When discouragement appears to have taken hold, give me a glimpse of your everlasting presence that says, “I will be with you to the end of the age.” Amen.
See You Tonight
