Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Genesis 37:23-25
So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the long robe with sleeves that he wore; and they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it. Then they sat down to eat; and looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels carrying gum, balm, and resin, on their way to carry it down to Egypt.

Thought for the Day: Sheryl Sandberg is a name some of you might have heard recently. She works for Facebook, and was testifying before Congress a few days ago. I reference her today, not because of anything happening in Congress, but because of a book she wrote that came from her own grief around the sudden death of her husband. Sandberg writes, “I think we build resilience to prepare for whatever adversity we’ll face. And we all face some adversity – we’re all living some form of Option B.” The language of “Option B” comes from the title of the book, but the line, “…we’re all living some form of Option B” is one of the most insightful things I have read recently. How many of us can look back over the last year or decade and say, “Nailed it”? How many of us would think that everything went exactly as we planned it? Not too many of us. We should always remain committed to our dreams, but life happens, and often those dreams need modification. And as a person of faith, I find a lot of grace in Option B. It appears that God, in love, always has alternatives for us when our current path abruptly ends. Joseph’s story had an Option B and C and probably even D.

Prayer: For your grace, O Lord, I am thankful. It is your grace that assists me in dealing with all the unexpected and unannounced happenings in my life. Again, thank you! Amen.
