Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Psalm 55:12-13
It’s not an enemy that is insulting me— I could handle that. It’s not someone who hates me who is exalted over me— I could hide from them. No. It’s you, my equal, my close companion, my good friend!

Thought for the Day: At our Wednesday Evening Program last night, those who attended Second Chance Sunday to go deeper on the issue of Betrayal, discussed this passage. Many different people can hurt us, but betrayal is unique and requires an important component not found in our enemies or those who hate us. That component is trust. Though we may not like the pain caused, it shouldn’t be a surprise when those who feel animosity toward us attempt to cut us down at the knees. Even when it is a complete stranger, an injury might be shocking, but it is not betrayal. What makes betrayal cut so deep is what the author of the Psalm is suggesting – it is a close friend, one that the author describes as a companion. These are the people with whom our guard can be lowered. These are people with whom we had complete confidence. It is not an easy journey back to the place where we are willing to let our guard down to anyone. We wear a mask; we keep people at a distance; we pretend nothing occurred. We can act and pretend all we want, but it doesn’t change the fact that we have been deeply wounded. Seek both God and a good counselor. Both of them will hear you talk through the pain and help you to glimpse a way forward.

Prayer: Listening and Compassionate Savior, I turn to you in those moments when I find myself knocked down by betrayal. The very people I would have expected to help are those who have betrayed me. I feel alone. I ache for friendship and the dependability that comes with it. Be that presence as I begin my journey forward. Amen.
