Scripture: Luke 19:4-6
So Zacchaeus ran ahead and climbed up a sycamore tree so he could see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. When Jesus came to that spot, he looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, come down at once. I must stay in your home today.” So Zacchaeus came down at once, happy to welcome Jesus.
Thought for the Day: Zacchaeus is described as a ruler among tax collectors (vs.2). He’s not just a despised tax collector, but the ruler (leader) among them. As a kid, I remember people saying, “You’re not just a jerk. You’re the king of the jerks.” That’s the way people would have viewed Zacchaeus, but Jesus refused to allow the opinions of others and the unethical choices of Zacchaeus to keep him from reaching out to Zacchaeus with love and hospitality. On this World Communion Sunday, let us reflect on the Spirit of Christ who continues to preside at the Lord’s Table and welcomes us with love and hospitality. The opinions of others, even when those opinions might be rooted in a less than glamorous past, really do not matter to the one who invites us to come and feast. And maybe, just maybe, we will know the same transformation that Zacchaeus came to know.
Prayer: O Lord of the Table, may the breaking of the bread and sharing of the cup allow me to once again know of your generous love that seeks to heal and transform my life. Amen.
