Scripture: Mark 12:13-14
They sent some of the Pharisees and supporters of Herod to trap Jesus in his words. They came to him and said, “Teacher, we know that you’re genuine and you don’t worry about what people think. You don’t show favoritism but teach God’s way as it really is. Does the Law allow people to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay taxes or not?”
Thought for the Day: Jesus was described as genuine, unconcerned about what people thought of him, showing no favoritism and teaching God’s way. This is how Jesus was described by those who sought to entrap him and kill him. How could those who lifted such praise upon Jesus seek to corner him for the purpose of his removal? Have you ever discovered that those who praised you the most in public were those who were really trying to undermine you? In the situation of the Religious Leaders, their praise of Jesus was probably rooted in their genuine belief, yet there was such fear in regard to the implications of his life that they needed to get rid of him. That may sound contradictory, yet it happens all the time. Throughout the history of Christianity, there have been those who lived such a beautiful and genuine life, yet there were others (often behind the scenes) who tried to undermine this good work or even bring harm. Selfless acts of love threaten individuals and the establishment. It always has and always will. It doesn’t seek to do so intentionally, but by its very nature, the love of God – a relentless and unconditional love – can upset the proverbial applecart of people’s daily lives.
Prayer: You are good and gracious to all, O Loving Lord. The power of your love is too often underestimated and under-appreciated. We like it for the feel-good quality, but we can undervalue its power in our lives. Give us the courage to be open to your transformative power, even when it causes some discomfort. This we pray in the name of the one whose love caused some discomfort, Jesus Christ. Amen.
