Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1st Corinthians 11:17-18
Now I don’t praise you as I give the following instruction because when you meet together, it does more harm than good. First of all, when you meet together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and I partly believe it.

Thought for the Day: When Paul writes about the folks in Corinth meeting together as the church, the language creates an image of something new being formed when the individual members come together. It might undermine the old song, “I am the church, you are the church, we are the church together.” If pushed, Paul might cut the first two sections and just sing, “We are the church, we are the church, we are the church together.” In today’s world, we often define church in a specific location, and even at a specific hour on Sundays. Let us expand our thinking, and recognize the potential we have when gifted individuals are bound together in the Spirit with a specific vision and mission. Our perception of church has too often limited our capacity to be about the work of God in the world.

Prayer: Continue to bring us together in ways that will impact the world with your love, O Lord. Amen.
