Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 2nd Peter:3:13-14

But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.

Thought for the Day: I really enjoyed the newest Avengers Movie entitled, Avengers: Endgame. The term endgame comes from chess, and though I not much of chess player, I believe it describes that point in the game when only a few pieces remain on the board. I won’t spoil the movie, but that makes some sense. For people of faith, it seems as if we are playing with an endgame in mind. I’m not suggesting we are currently in an endgame (end of times), but it seems as if Christ-like living assumes a way of life that resembles the end, the goal. For Jesus, the end never justified the means. If anything, the means were to embody the end. The how you plan to get to the destination (the final objective) should look no different than the final objective. This is tough stuff as it is often more challenging, and assumes a lot of patience and trust in the process. Our social and political struggles are often intensified because dramatic changes are made assuming that changes of structure are going to change behavior. There are clearly times when structural changes need to occur, but I never hear people putting forth systematic plans for how change will occur at every level. The same is true in church, family or even among couples as they try to make changes to their finances. How do we embody our goal today in simple, yet systematic changes that clearly define the endgame?

Prayer: You are good and kind, O Lord, and you have a dream for all of creation. May the dream you have enfleshed in Jesus be the dream I dream today as I interact with the people around me. Amen.
