According to the Prophet Isaiah, “It will be said: ‘Survey, survey; build a road! Remove barriers from my people’s road’” (57:14). I have never personally built a road, yet my guess is that without the proper knowledge or tools, such a task would be challenging, maybe impossible. There are many roads associated with the journey of faith—the road to Calvary; the streets paved with gold; the road toward reconciliation; the pathway to forgiveness; the road of repentance; Via Dolorosa (the sorrowful way); the way of Jesus; the highway of our God. The image from Isaiah 57 could be used for anyone trying to build and pave a route from one place to another in their journey of faith. What I take away from Isaiah is that no matter the journey you face in your personal faith journey, if you take it seriously, work will be required. Don’t rush it. Take the proper steps. Don’t go halfway on the project. If you’re serious, the time and energy you give to the journey and the path itself will serve you well in the end.

Guide me in this moment and along my unique path, O Lord of the Journey. Provide me the necessary tools for the work required, while also giving me the vision to see the destination and the best way to that blessed place. Amen.
