Scripture: Galatians 1:23
…they only heard it said, “The one who formerly was persecuting us is now proclaiming the faith he once tried to destroy.”
Thought for the Day: Today, we begin a sermon series entitled: From Meaninglessness to Meaningness. Yes, I’m pretty sure I coined a new word: meaningness. I believe they call that neologism. The idea was to contrast these two very similar words: Meaninglessness -and- Meaningness, because the difference may not seem all that significant on the surface. In fact, there are many things that might appear very similar, but with a closer observation, it is apparent that one has meaning and the other does not. The Apostle Paul, formerly known as Saul, was the same guy on the surface, but after that day on the Road to Damascus, he was transformed into something entirely new. Because he was physically the same guy who had persecuted the church, there was a lot of concern initially when he claimed to have changed. Yet Paul had gone from Meaninglessness to Meaningness. He had found true meaning beyond all the things that culture and religion had claimed as meaningful. Today, there are many who claim to provide meaning, but once you scratch the surface, it is the same old fear-based, controlling and self-serving understanding of religion that has been around for centuries. Jesus did not give fully of himself just to resurface the old meaningless garbage. He was God’s agent of real change. Let’s join together this morning as begin a four-week study of Paul’s Letter to the Church in Galatia.
Prayer: Lead me to that place, O Living God, where I may encounter true life-giving meaning for myself and for all of humanity. Amen.
