Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Acts 17:5-7a
But the Jews became jealous, and with the help of some ruffians in the marketplaces they formed a mob and set the city in an uproar. While they were searching for Paul and Silas to bring them out to the assembly, they attacked Jason’s house. When they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some believers before the city authorities, shouting, “These people who have been turning the world upside down have come here also, and Jason has entertained them as guests…”

Thought for the Day: Like the prophets, the Apostle Paul and his message were not always accepted with grace. In this part of the early church story, Paul and Silas had arrived in the city of Thessalonica and started preaching. Some were moved by what they heard, but others were not. So angry were some among the religious establishment that they organized a gang that intended to do harm to Paul and Silas, but when they couldn’t find them, Jason took the brunt of the anger. Though their accusations against Paul and Silas were technically true (they were turning the world upside down), the discomfort Paul’s message caused ended up bringing trouble to those who were only supporters. The message of repentance and faithfulness is rarely heard well, and it doesn’t matter if you were the preacher or simply the person who provided housing for the preacher, know that there will probably be some negative ramifications. It’s strange how the message of love, compassion, repentance and service is not heard well by many. It challenges their way of life and all that is customary and familiar. Though these stories are nearly 2000 years old, the basic message remains the same. If you are going to get involved in the turn the world upside down Gospel, there will probably be some unexpected ramifications – just like Jason experienced. This is what prophets like Jeremiah experienced often. Remember, we are continuing our look at Jeremiah this Sunday – Sermon Title: A Mutterer Mutters.

Prayer: I’m either in or I am not. Call me to be in the good work of your Gospel, O Gracious Giver. Even when there is trouble, or out right rejection, keep me focused upon your life-giving message. Amen.
