Scripture: Jeremiah 15:16
When your words turned up, I feasted on them; and they became my joy, the delight of my heart, because I belong to you, LORD God of heavenly forces.
Thought for the Day: Have you ever felt as if you were called by God to do something, started doing it, and then thought to yourself, why did I say YES. Chapter 15 is Jeremiah’s lament in regard to his call – his moment of saying, “Why did I agree to do this!” He recognizes everything he has had to give up, all the sacrifices he has made. It is not just an individual complaining as the lament is genuine and the suffering has been real. In the midst of the lament, Jeremiah offers the above words as a memory – possibly the memory of the initial call of God for him to be a prophet. And though Jeremiah is still shaky because of the threats against his life, that memory remains strong. I can’t say for sure, but I believe this memory in the midst of the lament has allowed Jeremiah to take a breath and to once again recognize God’s presence with him. Memories of God’s gracious activity can serve the function of awakening our senses to God’s gracious activity in the present. Jeremiah will later hear God say, “I will make you a sturdy bronze wall against these people. They will attack you, but they won’t triumph, because I am with you to protect and rescue you, declares the LORD” (15:20). I believe those were the words God was always whispering to Jeremiah, but when things became difficult, he could not hear God’s voice. Yet the memory of what God had done awakened him to what God was doing, and in that awakening, he was able to move forward in faith.
Prayer: I give you thanks, Mighty God, for how you have walked with me in the past. May those memories help awaken me to your presence in this moment – for you are the One who walks with me even when I am unaware of your presence. Amen.
