Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1st Corinthians 4:16-18
I appeal to you, then, be imitators of me. For this reason I sent you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ Jesus, as I teach them everywhere in every church. But some of you, thinking that I am not coming to you, have become arrogant.

Thought for the Day: Paul suggested that some in the Church at Corinth were a bit arrogant. The word in the original Greek is Phusioo. This word literally means to puff up or to be swelled up. My grandmother might have suggested that they had gotten a little too big for their britches. This seems a somewhat strange accusation as Paul has just suggested to the people that they should imitate him. If you are going to accuse people of being puffed up, you should probably present yourself in a way that appears more humble. At the same time, Paul saw the church on a self-destructive path, and among the many suggestions he made was an invitation to remember his life while he had worked among them. Maybe it was a bit of arrogance on his part, or maybe he was simply inviting them to think back to what he taught and did while he was with them. He wanted nothing more than for them to remember back to a time when there was more unity and respect.

Prayer: Let us bring to mind all those who have provided us a witness of your grace and love, O Lord. Let us remember those whose life stories teach us how best to live in community. Amen.
