Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Hebrews 12:1
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us…

Thought for the Day: In worship today, we will be reflecting on the finish line. I’ll be suggesting that we need to know the finish line we seek, and here in Hebrews, it speaks of “the race that is set before us…” Might I suggest that there are many races being set before us, among them is a race called the rat race. As I understand it, the rat race is not the race God wishes for us to run. There is a race up the corporate ladder that many run, and though it is good to have goals and to work your way up in employment, too many people view it like a battle of the gladiators. The race Hebrews speaks of is one that a great cloud of witnesses has already run – setting for us the example. These folks have out done themselves in showing love and kindness; they have demonstrated a generosity that would leave most of us speechless; they have reflected the life of Jesus within their own lives. Today and each day that follows, let us be about running the race that a great cloud of witnesses has already run faithfully.

Prayer: Help me to keep each step of my life upon the path of faithfulness, O Lord. I wish to run the race with the same integrity and grace that so many others have. Amen.
