Scripture: 1st John 2:7-8
Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word that you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new commandment that is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.
Thought for the Day: As I read this, I believe the author is reminding us that the message of God has never changed. As God is the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end, God is also the unchanged changer. Or as the book of Hebrews suggests, “…he is the same yesterday, today and forever.” The message of love and mercy is at the core of who God has been and will forever be, yet the human perspective is always changing. How we understand the message and live the message has been shaped by our perspective. According to 1st John, the darkness through which we view this message is giving way to light. And the more light the more we are able to understand the message God intended from the beginning. Of course, let us not get overly confident or cocky. Even today with the gift of Jesus Christ, we still view the message as if we are looking through a mirror dimly. There remains many things blocking the light from fully revealing the message – many things we have put in place that keep us in the shadows.
Prayer: God of light and love, allow for your gifts to continually shine upon us and upon your message of life. With each passing day, we hope to better perceive and embrace the command of love and mercy which existed from the beginning. Amen.
