Maundy Thursday Prayer: On this day when we dine with you, O Glorious God, let us arrive at the table with humility and awe. Let us see what is contained within your invitation of grace, within the place made available to us at the table, and within the offering of bread and cup. We come to the table with many imperfections and failings. In our heart of hearts, we know many of the sins of commission and omission that we have committed, yet there are other sins that simply are beyond our capacity to discern in this moment. Even the disciples remained unaware of the sins they would commit that night, especially the sins of omission – the failure to do what was right and good and faithful.
O Compassionate Lord, allow for the grace revealed in the reenactment of the Last Supper to beckon our hearts toward confession and renewal. Bring us to the place where we can feast with you as disciples of the one who will be betrayed this night. Encourage us as we follow your lead, Loving Lord, and by the inspiring life of Jesus, may we walk with you to the garden of Gethsemane and to the hill of Golgotha. Through your Spirit, may we find the courage to be your witnesses throughout these painful and dark days. We offer these words of prayer in the name of Jesus Christ, the one whose table made room for all and whose bread revealed love beyond measure. Amen.
