Scripture: Matthew 5:43-45
You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.
Thought for the Day: We rattle off portions of the Sermon on the Mount, but I wonder how often we really allow for the words to spill over us and into us. As I referenced in my sermon on Sunday, Jesus raised the bar more than an inch or two. His vision and expectation should be troublesome to anyone who takes them seriously. In the above words, Jesus shakes-up and frustrates the most commonly held cultural expectations. For Matthew, Jesus is about introducing and making real God’s realm. And for those who seek such a realm, how we view others and how we deal with conflict demonstrates whether or not we are moving in the right direction. Jesus does not hold to old expectations, but the high ideals of God’s Kingdom. Let us be a people who do not hold to those old expectations, but are living our lives as those who genuinely believe the high ideals of God’s realm.
Prayer: May your realm of transformative and healing love, O Lord, be the greatest calling upon my heart. I ask this in the name of the one who embodied your realm, Jesus. Amen.
