Scripture: Acts 7:55 (the Message)
But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, hardly noticed – he only had eyes for God, whom he saw in all his glory with Jesus standing at his side.
Thought for the Day: I like the way the Message translates this part of Acts 7. Stephen hardly noticed the crowd around him that was gaining a mob-mentality. The world around him was in chaos, but he only had eyes for God. So focused and full of the Holy Spirit, it was as if he had been inoculated in such a way that fear and anxiety would not bring him down. I am always cautious to make comparisons to any of the great witnesses of the faith, but there were some moments in worship today when the Spirit appeared to enter into the space and people with such power that a holy-fullness was palpable. People seemed to glimpse the presence and power of God, and even if it was just a moment or two, the fear and anxiety previously felt seemed to dissipate. For those of you who were there, thank you for being part of something special and alive.
Prayer: We claim your presence in every moment of every day, O Lord of Life, but there are moments when a community’s yearning and openness make that presence visible and tangible. Thank your for such moments when we, as community, are more available to that life-giving presence. Amen.
