Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Genesis 33:10-11
Jacob said, “No, please, do me the kindness of accepting my gift. Seeing your face is like seeing God’s face, since you’ve accepted me so warmly. Take this present that I’ve brought because God has been generous to me, and I have everything I need.” So Jacob persuaded him, and he took it.

Thought for the Day: Jacob and Esau had a rough childhood, and it didn’t get much better as they got older. After many life-experiences that enlightened them, the two men and their families came face to face. There was anxious tension, but Esau broke the tension with a hug. Jacob had brought gifts as a request for forgiveness and reconciliation, but Esau didn’t initially want them. Jacob responded by connecting generosity to gratitude. He recognized the abundance in his life, and he was truly grateful. Might I suggest that too often people see a feeling of thankfulness for the abundance as all that is required, but Jacob reminds us how showing generosity and encouraging the acceptance of that generosity is necessary for gratitude.

Prayer: Everlasting God, continue to be our guide that we may clearly find reason for genuine gratitude. This we pray in the name of the one who gives us reason to be thankful, Jesus Christ. Amen.
