Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 2:1
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.

Thought for the Day: Though most scholars and historians will tell you that we have no evidence of such a census at this time in history, I do not believe it interferes with what the Gospel writer was intending to communicate. We all know the language: “In a Galaxy Far, Far Away…” but its familiarity does not change the fact that it is science fiction. Star Wars takes place in a different world, but Luke wanted to put the story of Jesus squarely in the world of those living in the first century and hearing this story told for the first time. This was not a Galaxy far away. For those who first heard Luke’s Gospel, they knew it as their story.

Prayer: Though nearly 2,000 years old, your story of grace incarnate, O God, remains a story that finds a way of being relevant. The story is told every year, and though its context is old, you find a way of making it our story again. Amen.
