Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.
Thought for the Day: Let me begin by saying that today is an anniversary of sorts. It was ten years ago while serving at First Christian Church of Naples that I started writing a daily devotional. In a time of new beginnings, I asked that congregation to join me for 30 days of prayer that included emailing a daily thought and prayer to those who requested it. When day 31 arrived, I didn’t stop writing. In those ten years, I have taken a few days off, while also asking both staff and church members to write guest devotionals here and there. I do believe it has been a helpful tool to some throughout the last decade, but it has been extraordinarily helpful to me. I am not always the most disciplined individual, but writing and distributing these devotionals each day on multiple platforms has helped me to focus and be more disciplined in other areas as well. Paul uses the word “strict” to describe the training of the self, and though I wish I felt comfortable using that word, it is an ideal for which I must continue to strive. Hopefully tomorrow, in some small way, I will be a bit more disciplined in my spiritual life than I am today.
Prayer: Continue to call me to the good work of the Spiritual Disciplines, O Spirit of the Living God. Continue to provide for me opportunities for my spirit to be trained for the real work of living your Gospel of love and forgiveness wherever I may go. I pray in the name of the one who provided the model of spiritual living, Jesus Christ. Amen.
