Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Matthew 3:1-2
In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

Thought for the Day: John the Baptist started his work of preparing the ground work for his relative, Jesus, who would soon follow. One of the great discussion points for scholars and students of the Bible is the language of how “the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This does not describe something that is making a drive by with no intention of stopping. It does not describe something that is keeping its distance and remaining out of sight. John declares that God’s kingdom has (past and current) come near (close proximity, like someone standing next to us). Jesus has yet to make his official entrance onto the main stage of his ministry, yet John is making it clear that God’s kingdom is upon us. With everything I associate with God’s Kingdom and what I see all around me, I find it difficult to join John in his declaration. Though could it be that it is fully present around us, yet we remain oblivious to its presence; living lives that ignore it; making choices that disregard its implications for the world? Begin your day with a prayer for keen awareness to the presence of God’s heavenly realm and for the courage to live a life that represents that realm.

Prayer: Give me what is necessary to perceive your presence in my life, O King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Provide me an awareness so that I see, and a repentant heart so that I can live accordingly. Amen.
