Scripture: 1st Corinthians 14:23-24
If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your mind? But if all prophesy, an unbeliever or outsider who enters is reproved by all and called to account by all.
Thought for the Day: I referenced these words in my studies on Wednesday. Though Paul brags earlier about his own ability to speak in tongues, he is also expressing real concern about the divisiveness of the spiritual gift of tongues. At least in Corinth, it appears to have done exactly the opposite of what a Spiritual Gift should do – instead of building up, it has divided. The question I put forth at my studies was simple: What do we do today in our worship that leaves “outsiders” and “unbelievers” thinking to themselves, “these church people are out of their minds”? We must remember that Jesus is the educational model for Christianity. What I mean by that is that God used Jesus to bring what appeared to be a complex idea down to our level (literally) where we might better understand it. Let us never take the divine tool of accessibility and understanding (Jesus) and present him in a way that appears completely inaccessible.
Prayer: Let me continue to make the path of grace clear and welcoming for all those you love, O Lord who chose to live among us. Amen.
