Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1st Corinthians 15:1-2
Now I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you—unless you have come to believe in vain.

Thought for the Day: That’s quite a sentence! Of course, the original Greek does not have punctuation so you’re never absolutely sure where a sentence or thought begins and ends. With that said, it is interesting how Paul once again refers to the folks in Corinth as his brothers and sisters. This is one of twenty times Paul uses this language of family familiarity. Now we don’t know for sure how the people in Corinth heard such language, but in most situations, the response is positive. To speak of others with intimacy and care helps to reduce barriers and distrust. Paul is entering into a significant presentation of the Gospel (Good News) message, yet this beginning makes it feel less hierarchical – less an attempt to impose and more like a real sharing. If you think about Paul’s understanding of the Gospel (he shares it over the next few verses), it is not about God who forces the divine will on people, but graciously offers this gift to all.

Prayer: The Good News you offer, Gracious God, is full of love and compassion – in both the content of the message and the means by which that message is offered. Amen.
