Prayer for the Week: The author of Psalms 6 cries out, “My soul is in deep anguish. How long, Lord, how long?” Too many people feel beaten and tossed by the waves of physical and emotional aggression. So many people join their voices with the voice of the Psalmist and ask,”How long, Lord, how long?”
O Spirit who heard the cries of the people in Egypt and responded with an unfailing love, we look at our world, and if honest with ourselves, we see a need for repentance and true transformation. As Jesus came to bring a wildly diverse world together in love, we see only a ripping apart of everything that is holy and just. Divisions are divided again; the marginalized are marginalized further; the lost are unwelcome on the path home; the wronged are made to feel guilty; the abused are deemed the provocateur; the powerless are stripped of opportunity. Do you hear the cries of your people, Gracious One? Do you hear the cries?
Our hearts turn to you, Merciful God, for there will be no mending without your love. We will know no healing without the generosity of your kindness. Provide for us a picture of your world, the world you believe is possible – the world you intended. Provide us the picture, and then give us the Living Word as our mentor and model. Whether in study, prayer or meditation, connect us with this dynamic presence that beckons us to a place where humility and vulnerability can begin to reverse all the damage done by degradation and exploitation. This is the work you have given us in Jesus, and by your Spirit, we will move forward in faith. Amen.
