Scripture: Luke 5:16
But Jesus would withdraw to deserted places for prayer.
Thought for the Day: The idea of centering or contemplative prayer grew out of the reflections of those who were often described as the Desert Fathers and Mothers (300 – 500 years after Jesus). Of course, these Faithful practitioners of prayer believed passionately about putting oneself in a place (physical, emotional, spiritual) where s/he could feast on the lofty and breath-taking mysteries of God. It had less to do with answers and more to do with knowing and submitting to the power of what was a divine conundrum – God’s unconditional love revealed in the man, Jesus of Nazareth. Throughout the centuries, there have been many helpful techniques for those seeking to center and contemplate. One such technique is to focus on a single word. Using the above passage, I spent time yesterday reflecting on the word withdraw. When I began to match my breathing with the syllables of the word, I experienced some moments (not lengthy) where I felt as if I was withdrawing from the chaos of the moment, but not alone. I felt guided by the one who, according to Luke, withdrew to a desert place for prayer.
Prayer: Continue to encourage my prayer life, O God of the desert. Call me to withdraw, not for the purpose of hiding, but to seek you and experience you. I do this, not only for myself, but for the work of your kingdom. Amen.
