Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Proverbs 17:28
Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.

Thought for the Day: Ecclesiastes reminds us how there is a time to be silent and a time to speak. Of course, most of us are too busy speaking when the time of silence comes and then goes. Julian of Norwich is considered one of Christianity’s greatest mystics. Her writings began with 16 (some say 15 or 17) visions she experienced during a time of illness. After recovering, Julian made the decision to become an Anchoress. This title described a woman who literally was entombed, usually in a small room attached to a church. There were three small windows (no doors) – one through which the Anchoress could watch worship and take communion. Another was for food, and the third was for people to come and receive wisdom from the Anchoress. It is not known for sure, but it is thought that Julian spent the rest of her life in that small space, much of it in silent prayer and meditation. I’m not suggesting we add such a room to the side of the Forum Sanctuary, but it is an impressive reminder of many throughout the centuries who have taken such practices very seriously. I have a difficult time relating to Julian of Norwich, but I can relate to the Proverb that speaks of a fool who decides to keep quiet. Even those of us who are a bit foolish can appear wise and discerning if only we pause long enough to make room for God’s presence to be known.

Prayer: Give me a few moments today, O Spirit who speaks through the silence. Allow me to enter this holy space that I might seek to be with you without attempting to impose my thoughts upon you. Amen.
