Scripture: Psalm 119:27-28
Cause me to understand the way of your precepts, that I may meditate on your wonderful deeds. My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word.
Thought for the Day: I hear these words as a prayer from a person who knows where to begin the search for strength. I also hear some people say, “I just ask for strength, and the Lord gives it to me.” I’m glad it works that way for some people, but it hasn’t worked that way for me. I believe God is pouring out strength and encouragement all the time, but am I open to it? Simply saying, “I want it, God!” hasn’t worked for me. It tends to be found when I meditate and seek to understand the teachings of scripture. Through prayerful reflection that happens day after day after day, a framework begins to be built within my spirit. The more time that is spent, the stronger the framework becomes. The more energy I put into my study and prayers, the sturdier the structure will be…the structure on which all my life hangs. If you are one that seems to get that strength with a simple request – God bless you! For the rest of us, we need to meditate on the wonderful deeds of our God. We need to be about the work of better understanding the ways of God, and only then will we be better positioned to draw and receive strength when our souls are weary.
Prayer: As I continue to search for you, Merciful God, find ways of feeding my spirit with your encouragement and strength. Amen.
