Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Mark 11:9-10
Those in front of him and those following were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessings on the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest!”

Thought for the Day: Hosanna is a word that continues to reinforce what was discussed in yesterday’s devotional The word comes from the Hebrew (hosia na) which was found in Psalm 118:25, “Please, save!” It was a request for deliverance. How often have we cried out for help, cried for assistance, cried out in desperation? It is the plea of someone who is experiencing agony – spiritual, emotional and/or physical. Later, it became the word used when an individual celebrated deliverance – as a word of joyful gratitude. As Jesus entered Jerusalem, I imagine people shouted, “Hosanna” for many reasons – probably as many reasons as there were people – shouts of joyful celebration and shouts in painful request.

Prayer: Hear my gratitude; hear my cries of agony; hear me, O Lord whose Blessed One has come. Help me to know that I am never alone, no matter my circumstances. Amen.
