Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Romans 6:5
If we were united together in a death like his, we will also be united together in a resurrection like his.

Thought for the Day: What does it look like to be united with Jesus in a resurrection like his? For Paul, it is a way of living life, the transformed life. Resurrection comes to us as a free gift, no strings attached. At the same time, it requires a YES from us. I am reminded of Parker Palmer who wrote:

Every religious tradition is rooted in mysteries I don’t pretend to understand, including claims about what happens after we die. But this I know for sure: as long as we’re alive, choosing resurrection is always worth the risk.

Choosing resurrection, choosing the transformed life, is risky because it requires us to leave behind the life we know well. It requires a risk because choosing resurrection demands discipleship and taking up the cross. There is a risk involved, yet Palmer is correct in suggesting that the risk is worth it. And it’s not just because of the promised eternity, but the ability to live with God purpose in our lives – a purpose that is born from and directed through the power of resurrection. It is risky, but well worth the risk. In fact, life without resurrection might not really be life at all.

Prayer: As I unite myself more fully with you, O God, may the renewing power of your grace claim me and shape me as an instrument of resurrection in the world. Amen.
