Scripture: Proverbs 25:12
Wise correction to an ear that listens is like a gold earring or jewelry of fine gold.
Thought for the Day: How do you hear a critique, even if it is a useful or constructive critique? I am reminded of Dale Carnegie who always reminded his readers that human beings tend not to work from a place of logic, but from a place of emotion. Upon hearing a critique of something we have done, our first reaction is to be hurt, to think we are not liked or to find all our insecurities threatened. A lot of helpful information and important insight has been ignored or thrown back in the face of the one who shared it because the person critiqued was not ready to hear it. I think we’ve all been there. This is where we need to be aware that God might just be sending a few wise people to us with a word of correction, a needed critique or an important challenge. I know it can be painful (and actually, I’m working on this myself), but I believe we need to be more open to those voices who do not mean to cause us any harm or pain. In fact, they want the best for us…even if it initially stings a little. Such wise correction is not just an empty trinket, but a piece of fine jewelry.
Prayer: Give me both ears to hear and a spirit willing to listen, O Lord. My ego has been hurt on more than one occasion, and so forgive me when I am cautious. At the same time, I wish to take note of your advice as it is spoken by the wise. Amen.
