Scripture: Ephesians 4:2
Conduct yourselves with all humility, gentleness, and patience. Accept each other with love…
Thought for the Day: Have you ever wished the AND was an OR? Paul invites his listeners to conduct themselves with all humility, gentleness and patience. Notice that he didn’t say, “…or patience.” The OR would have given us options; it would have given us permission to choose; it would have given us the opportunity to opt-out of one or two of the three. There are days when I wish I had the discretion to say, “I’m going to try to be humble and gentle today, but don’t expect any patience whatsoever.” I think Christians (and I should acknowledge that I include myself here) have often chosen to read the OR into the passage – diminishing the requirements and diluting the power of a faithful life.
Prayer: Keep me, Merciful God, from looking for an easy way out. Encourage my walk of faith, especially when it is demanding and strenuous. Amen.
