Scripture: John 3:20
All who do wicked things hate the light and don’t come to the light for fear that their actions will be exposed to the light.
Thought for the Day: In the last few days, I have watched some movies and tv programs that have troubled my heart. I rewatched the movie, 42: the Jackie Robison Story; I watched some episodes of Genius, the story of Albert Einstein; I watched the movie Free State of Jones. It was not intentional, but each one of the movies showed the absolute worst of humanity – slavery, racism, hate, etc. At numerous points in my viewing, I said to myself, “How is it that human beings can be so blinded by insecurities that lead to hate and violence?” Light often exposes those things we do not wish to have exposed. Whether it is an individual struggling with self-worth, a trauma that has deeply impacted a person, or sense of hopelessness brought on by circumstance, we create places within our lives that we hope the light never finds. We don’t wish to name it, so we surely don’t want others to see it and name it. We fear the light, yet the light spoken of in John’s Gospel is the light of God’s grace that never would bring injury or suffering. It only seeks healing and the fullness of life that allows us as human beings to live together respectfully and peacefully.
Prayer: With some anxiousness, I ask you to bring your light upon my life. O Holy Source of Light, shine upon me even if it reveals what I do not wish for it to reveal. Amen.
