Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Romans 13:10
Love doesn’t do anything wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is what fulfills the Law.

Thought for the Day: I have been convicted by the words of Richard Rohr. He writes:

When any church defines itself by exclusion of anybody, it is always wrong. It is avoiding its only vocation, which is to be the Christ. The only groups that Jesus seriously critiques are those who include themselves and exclude others from the always-given grace of God.

The powerful challenge Rohr puts before us is found in the idea that our ONLY vocation is to be the Christ. And in our living into that vocation, we need to make sure we understand Jesus who was the Christ. At no point did he exclude, yet he was quick to critique those who were excluding. If someone tells you about Jesus, and what they tell you encourages hate, excludes certain groups, and ultimately brings division, it is ok to invite that person to read one of the Gospels. This should not be hurtful, for it is clear that such a person has not read any of the Gospels.

Prayer: By the gift of your Spirit, O Triune God, allow for my life and life-work to become a clear revelation of the Christ – your agent of love, redemption and healing. Amen.
