Scripture: Psalm 25:1-5
To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; do not let me be put to shame; do not let my enemies exult over me. Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame; let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long.
Thought for the Day: Barton W. Stone, one of our denominational founders, said the following:
“I suggest we restore the church as it was in the New Testament day, rooting it firmly in the pattern set by the early disciples. With its roots there, it can sway and bend to adjust to the times, but fundamentally it would always be the same. A strong tree is still a tree whatever winds blow. And the church would still be the church despite men’s opinions blowing about it.”
I love those words, but I am not naive enough to overlook the vagueness of the idea of having strong roots, but allowing ourselves to sway in the winds of a changing culture. This is the balance with which we must continually struggle, yet too often people of faith are unaware of the tension between remaining faithful to the core ideas of Jesus -and- recognizing how God might be leading us to greater understandings through science and the evolution of thought. Let us continue to strive toward the magnificent witness of Jesus; let us be honest about our struggles and failures; let us not over look the tensions found within scripture itself; let us be gracious toward one another as we each venture along the faith journey; let us place love above all other things.
Prayer: O King of Kings, I trust you to lead me along the path of faithful love…even when the next few steps may feel strange and awkward. Amen.
