Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Galatians 3:22-26Galatians-Image
But the scripture has imprisoned all things under the power of sin, so that what was promised through faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.  Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.

Thought for the Day: At first glance, it may appear that ‘scripture’ (in this passage, it is synonymous with ‘the law’) is a bad thing since it imprisons us.  The Greek word is sugkleio, and it describes an enclosure or a net that captures fish.  But Paul views this experience of being stuck as part of God’s strategy to draw people into grace.  It is only when a person is able to recognize that s/he is never going to live all the rules with perfection that s/he is able to humble to him/herself before God.  It is then that we can allow grace, God’s immeasurable love, to free us…and in that freedom, a person is better able to live out the spirit and intent of the rules.

Prayer: Lord, let me never use my inability of achieving perfection as an excuse.  Instead, let the knowledge of your saving grace unencumbers me of all such excuses.  Amen.
